Expectations After Breast Augmentation Surgery

Denver, Colorado

Breast augmentation surgery, while fairly common in our country, is still surgery. Your body needs time to recover from anesthesia, to heal and to get used to its new shape and size. Every woman recovers at a different rate, but a definite recovery period is still necessary and important to your overall final results.

During your initial consultation, and after your surgery is completed, Dr. Broadway will discuss avoiding activities that require bending, stretching, lifting or straining, and will emphasize the importance of getting lots of rest. Following Dr. Broadway's instructions carefully will help you to recover faster and more comfortably.

Most women can return to regular activities after one week, but will still be cautioned to avoid strenuous activities. Women who opt for subglandular breast implant placement may recover somewhat more quickly than women who choose submuscular placement.

The First 48 Hours

The first 48 hours after your breast augmentation surgery, you may feel somewhat uncomfortable. Common issues during this brief time are fatigue and breast pain. This can be managed with pain medication, but some soreness will persist. Having a loved one or friend with you during the first few days can be very comforting.

The First Few Months

During the first several weeks of recovery, your breasts will likely be sore and tender. They may remain somewhat swollen for up to five weeks. Avoiding physical contact until this sensitivity has passed is wise. Exercise and other strenuous activities should not be resumed until at least 2-4 weeks have passed.

During the recovery you may feel frustrated that you're not healing faster. Or, you may feel very well and begin to engage in strenuous activities. Both of these attitudes may cause additional injury. Remember that breast augmentation is surgery, and the body needs time to adjust and heal. Rushing the process may diminish the quality of your outcome.

A Word About Scars

The incisions from your breast augmentation surgery will turn firm and pink, staying that way for about six weeks post-surgery. Eventually, the scars will fade, but never completely disappear. Fortunately, in the hands of a highly skilled cosmetic surgeon like Dr. David Broadway, special techniques will ensure incisions are properly placed so that your scars will fade until they are almost impossible to detect. And following doctor's orders after surgery is another way you can contribute to scars that are barely noticeable.

Dr. Broadway offers all of his breast augmentation surgery patients three complimentary Photo Rejuvenation treatments 3-6 months after your surgery. This laser will help to pull pigment color from your scar to make it even less noticeable. To learn more about this treatment please contact our office.
