A firm, rounded and perky backside has long been a symbol of youth and the focus of fashion. However, just like perfect breasts, full lips, or a tiny tummy, most people aren’t endowed with a beautiful backside.

Alternative to Implants

Many doctors offer buttock enlargement with implants, but buttock implants have a number of disadvantages. Buttock implants can be uncomfortable. Because the muscles in your buttocks are working whenever you are walking, they put pressure on the implant. This can push the implant out of place, and can cause numerous infections.

Because many people feel they have more than enough fat, just not in the right areas, the words “fat transfer” can bring a feeling of giddy excitement. A fat transfer to your buttocks from an area such as your thighs or love handles can help shape both areas into something closer to your ideal, and leave you looking fit and youthful.

Fat Transfer Procedure

The procedure for a fat transfer to your buttocks is easily explained in several steps:

  • Liposuction of unwanted fat from other areas
  • Purification of fat
  • Injection of fat
  • Wearing a compression garment after transfer

Dr. David Broadway can remove unwanted fat from donor areas such as your abdomen or legs and have it purified.

The injections are made in a series of thin ribbon like rows, each injection only a few millimeters in diameter. The injections must be kept small enough that the adjacent blood vessels can support the new tissue and keep it alive. In addition, this helps make the affected area smoother, and enables Dr. David Broadway to more closely control the end shape of your buttocks.

Recovery Time and Results

After you have had a fat transfer to your buttocks, you will wear a compression garment for two weeks to retain the shape of the injected area and to minimize bruising. During this two-week period, you should avoid any strenuous activity or sitting for long periods of time, just as you would after any other surgery. You may be able to resume regular activities such as driving within a week, but for best results you should follow the recovery guidelines closely. Some swelling and bruising may still occur, but should dissipate in about six weeks, at which time your recovery should be complete.

The result of a fat transfer procedure is larger, shapelier buttocks. Normally, not all of the injected fat survives, so it can be difficult to predict the amount of buttock enlargement you will achieve. This means that some patients may need a second procedure to achieve their desired buttock shape and size.
